A dinosaur adventure for fans of Jurassic Park! From the USA Today bestselling author of Earthrise.

Dinosaurs. Majestic giants. They’ve captured our imagination for generations. On planet Mintari, they live again.

But these magnificent beasts might soon disappear. And only one man can save them.

They call him Jurassic Joe. A semi-mythical figure. A ranger who lives in the wilderness of Mintari. Defender of dinosaurs. Bane of poachers. Folk hero. But is he real?

He better be. Because big game hunters are landing on Mintari. A lot of them. It will take a hero to stop them. And they must be stopped. Or the dinosaurs of Mintari will be lost forever.

Earth was a dying world, a spherical slum of urban decay. Some clever scientists discovered time travel. An immense amount of energy was required and the larger the time traveler, the more energy needed. But, A very small object could be sent and returned for a small amount of energy they could handle. They now had the ability to visit the past and retrieve a small amount of DNA from long extinct animals. Using that DNA, they could recreate the animals mankind had driven to extinction, but they couldn't unleash these dangerous animals on an extremely overpopulated world. That wouldn't very nice. Effective, though!

About the same time some other scientists discovered the star Nyx and its 5 habitable planets. The first planet found was named Cloventia and was chosen for people to live on. A second planet, named Dagon, was cleared for farming. Its fields fed the population of Cloventia. 3 times the size of Cloventia with a higher gravity, this was the perfect farming planet.

The scientists gave the last three planets to animals. One was given to recreated animals man had driven to extinction. Lions, tigers and bears happily ate each other. A second planet was given to Ice Age animals. Wooly mammoths, sabre tooth tigers roamed a frozen world. The last planet, worst of the lot, was given to dinosaurs. Mintari is all about the different types of dinosaurs, plants and insects of that era that were recreated there.

The story is about the characters that live and work with the dinosaurs on Mintari. First is Joe Triplehorn, a ranger whose job is the dinosaurs. Protecting, guarding and watching over the massive creatures is his job and his calling. He's nicknamed Jurassic Joe in the media and his ambition is to protect the dinosaurs from poachers and hunters who use the weapons manufactured by his father, Tobias. Joe has sworn to overcome the shame his family name signifies among his coworkers and the public. He is first among the rangers protecting the giant lizards.

Joe's sister, Amissa, is a celebrity, hunting animals and posing with their carcasses and posting her exploits on her huge social media following. Joe seeks to foil her hunts and attacks on his charges whenever he can. She will attempt to stop her brother with a bullet if necessary.

Simone LaRue is a reporter arriving on Mintari to write about Jurassic Joe and the dinosaurs he loves. The plucky redhead fears animals, even the noisy little ankle-biters favored among the billions of denizens of Cloventia. She is especially afraid of the towering dinosaurs she faces to meet Joe, but she must face her fears if she wants her story.

Figaro is my favorite of the human characters. Saved and raised by a herd of dinosaurs, she knows only her wild life as a member of the herd. If she ever knew a language, she has forgotten all but the communication she shares with her herd. Wild and untamed, Figaro must save her herd as she discovers who she is.

The nonhuman characters are the dinosaurs. Especially Dozer, Joe's companion and mount. A huge stegosaur, twice the size of an elephant, Dozer lives for Joe. Ivan is a huge, black-scaled T-Rex with a hunger for humans, especially Joe. They have history. Ivan killed and ate Joe's wife and unborn child.

This story is going to be the opening of a terrific series about the people and animals of Mintari with amazing human and nonhuman characters and strange and wonderful encounters between them. I cannot wait for the rest of the series! This is a great read!

For anyone who loves a good story with interesting characters, this is a book for you, if you also enjoy dinosaurs, this is an even better story for you. There was a lot of action and adventure, and I liked how the dinosaur interactions worked with the characters and story. The only loose ends were what happened to Ivan and the mother shaman at the very end, but since there is a book two, I am hoping that gets touched on in there. I enjoyed this book and recommend it.

This was a very long and somewhat disjointed story with too much description at times. It was repetitive in places, almost like a serial that has been put together into a novel. Overall, I think it was worth reading, but could stand with some editing.

Flying into Mintari, a reporter views the planet from above. Beautiful, verdant and spectacular, filled with lush forests, rivers, lakes and amazing views. She is excited to finally be here. Her photographer is with her and her purpose is to find and interview a legend, but first she has to find him. There is only one city on Mintari and as they near it, she sees it is fortified by a moat, surrounded by a huge wall and completely enclosed. Why, you ask? Mintari is not a planet inhabited and run by humans. The indigenous species here are Dinosaurs, who freely roam the entire planet. The humans who inhabit the city have to be protected, because here, Dinosaurs rule. Humans are secondary. The man she is looking for does not live within the city and she must find him, meaning she has to go beyond the wall, where her life will be on the line every second. Oh, and did I mention that the Dinosaurs on Mintari are protected. Hunting and killing them is illegal. Grab this book and enter the beauty and deadliness of Mintari.

Quite the original story ! Fresh ideas, lovable characters , some not even human ! Loved following alongside them , especially since the author believes in second chances !! Even for the Dinosaurs !!!

3.0 out of 5 stars Moving House? You could use this book to make your moving boxes

This book has such carboard characters, they are all so utterly good or utterly evil.

The actual premise of the story is good, not an island of dinosaurs but an entire planet.

The description of the dinosaurs, their habitats and behaviours was wonderful, so well written you could be there.

But the characters seemed to be an afterthought which is a shame. I've read other books by the author and enjoyed them so it's not that the author can't create good, believable characters. Just this time he didn't bother. A shame as the characters and their single dimension telegraph virtually every plot element.
